FAQ

Looking for more information about the work that we do? This is a collection of all the questions we are asked most often, listed here for your convenience. If there is anything we didn’t cover, please let us know.

What should the letters contain?

A submitted letter must be handwritten and at least five sentences in length. Each letter should be distinct and meaningful, so try to include jokes, nice quotations, or your unique spin. However, please do not bring up any politics, health issues, or religion in the letters, as we try to be as respectful as possible to the senior citizens. Then, when the letter is finished, sign your name on the bottom of the card.

What should the letters be made out of?

The letter should be standard-size paper (cardstock paper is preferable) and not too small, as seniors would have a harder time reading it. If you use plain paper, try to add color to the card by sketching, stickers, or cutout images using glue. However, please do not use any glitter. Finally, you could use one envelope for multiple letters; make sure that when doing so, the letters do not get damaged.

What are some ideas to start off with?

Start your letter with a greeting such as dear, (name)/hello, or anything else that elicits a friendly tone. You could talk about anything in a warm manner, such as your home, pets, food, pastimes, or interests, just to name a few. Additionally, mention that they are cherished, appreciated, and special. You could do this by sending your best wishes for happiness, joy, and comfort.

What should be on the envelope?

The envelope should have the correct address to ship to us; the address can be found only if you have received the completion form. Write “Letters4theBetter” on the front along with the number of letters in the envelope, your name, and your street address, although including your address is not mandatory.

How do these letters earn credit?

Each letter should take around 30 minutes, which means that every 4 letters receive 2 service hours. You must fill out this Google Form as here is where you will have to submit photos of your letters for approval. Please take clear photos and take multiple photos if needed. We should be able to clearly count how many letters there are. After receiving the photos, we will review them (we check the Google Form every Friday) and notify you if you have gotten approved. In the approval email we will send you a completion form containing mailing information and how to receive your service credit. Once you have received approval, please mail it to us within 5 days of being confirmed, so that you can earn your credit.
